CreaseBrief

We are looking for cricket stories that explain a decision, a performance or something about the culture around the game. Tell us whether your idea fits Cricket, Match Reports, Players, Tactics or Fitness, and work out the reader’s question before you draft the full piece.

Outline the match or topic, the evidence you have and what your take adds. That might be a ball-by-ball reading of one spell, a profile built on the record books, or a domestic story that deserves a wider audience. We care more about sound reasoning than about sounding like a well-known commentator.

What we look for

Send work that is your own, double-check names and numbers, and credit quotes to sources readers can trace. Keep opinion clearly apart from reporting, and if a team rumour is unconfirmed, say so in the copy. Get permission for any photos or video you supply, and declare team links, commercial work or financial interests that touch the story.

Working with the editorial desk

Tell us which areas you can write about and when you are free, and be ready for the desk to ask follow-up questions or for a sample. Sending a proposal gives you no right to publication, a job, payment, accreditation or a seat at the ground. Any commitment of that kind requires a separate agreement.

Possible writing areas

A Match Reports piece should tie the turning points to the situation in the game. A Tactics article can weigh a captain’s call against the conditions on the day, and Players or Fitness stories need careful sourcing whenever personal life or health comes up. Leave out private medical details and guesses about anyone’s motives.

Use the enquiry option below to introduce yourself, with a brief outline and links to writing that shows what you can do.
